Detail panels
Wherever DeltaVault shows one object’s details beside a list, grid or canvas, it uses the same panel: a table on the Catalog page, an entity in a model or in the Glossary, a hub or satellite on the Data Vault canvas, a task in a workflow, an AI skill in the Toolkit, a file in a build. The panel has one toolbar, one pop-out window and one question before an edit is dropped. This guide explains them once, so the guide for each surface can point here.
Where the panel opens
Section titled “Where the panel opens”The panel docks beside the list, grid or canvas you opened it from, and what you were looking at stays in place. Drag the panel’s left edge to make it wider or narrower, and double-click the edge to put the default width back. The width you choose is remembered in your browser. On a narrow window the panel opens over the content instead of beside it.
Read the toolbar
Section titled “Read the toolbar”The panel’s header ends in a row of icon buttons, always in this order. Each one appears only where the panel supports it.
- Save writes every edit the panel holds. It is dimmed until you change something, and it is dimmed with the reason in its tooltip when the edit cannot be saved here, most often “Read-only on main. Switch to a branch to edit.”
- Discard changes puts the stored values back and clears every edit the panel holds. It is dimmed while there is nothing to discard.
- More actions holds every other command for the object. A command that deletes or removes the object sits last, below a rule, and a command you cannot use is dimmed and shows why when you hover it.
- Pop out moves the panel into a window over the page. In that window the same spot holds Return to side pane.
- Close closes the panel.
The buttons are icons. Hover Save or Discard changes to see its name, and every button announces its name to a screen reader. The surface guides name each button by its label.
Edits wait for Save
Section titled “Edits wait for Save”A change you make in a panel is held until you select Save, and the panel saves everything it holds in one step. Until then nothing is written, so you can change several fields, or several sections of a Data Vault object, and save them together. A grid is different: its cells save as you go, as Editing in grids describes, even when the grid sits inside a panel.
Answer the Unsaved changes question
Section titled “Answer the Unsaved changes question”Anything that would drop a held edit asks first. Closing the panel, popping it out, selecting another object, switching tabs or leaving the page while the panel holds an edit opens Unsaved changes. The question names the object: “You have unsaved edits in this table. Save them, discard them, or keep editing.” It has three answers:
- Save and continue saves the edit and goes on with what you asked for.
- Discard changes drops the edit and goes on.
- Cancel stays where you were, with the edit still in the panel.
When the edit can no longer be saved where you are, for example because you switched the active branch to main while the panel held an edit, the edit is kept and the question changes: “You have unsaved edits in this table that cannot be saved here. Discard them, or keep editing.” It then offers only Discard changes and Cancel.
Closing or reloading the browser tab while a panel holds an edit shows the browser’s own warning.
Pop the panel out
Section titled “Pop the panel out”Select Pop out and the panel lifts into a window over the page that you can move and resize. Where the panel was the page’s main area, as it is for the Catalog page’s detail, that area reads Shown in a pop-out window with a Return here button.
To dock the panel back, select Return to side pane in the window’s toolbar, select Return here, or press Escape.
